I felt the need to write up my take on the LIV golf league. I’m probably the only one who cares what I think about the new league and that is fine. But I did want to put it down in words.
I don’t blame people for doing what they feel is best for them
Every person alive today grew up on had things happen in their lives that no one else has. I can’t apply the events in my life and how I see things to anyone else. We don’t know what other people went thru. We don’t know what great things or horrible things or everything in between happened to someone to influence how they see life at this point. So I have no problem with what people do as long as it doesn’t hurt others.
So I don’t judge any of the golfers who decided to go over to the LIV tour. Everyone that did probably had a good reason to make the change. Some were at the end of their careers and looking to make that one last big pay check. I’d guess that others felt like they couldn’t quite cut it on the PGA tour whether it was pressure or quality of the other golfers, who knows.
Some speculate Phil did it strictly for the money so he could pay off some gambling debt. I speculate there was some version of the truth to that but its purely a guess on my point. He did what he had to do and that’s fine.
I liked how Harold Varner III came out with his statement. Just a part of his actual letter,”The opportunity to join LIV golf is simply too good of a financial breakthrough to pass by. I know what it means to group up without much. This money is going to ensure that my kid and future Varners will have a solid base to start on…”
So to me Harold says, based on my life and experience the money is the most important thing and that’s why he chooses LIV. It will probably give him and his family what is most important to them. I get it, do I necessarily agree, no. And now….
Unfortunately everything is about money these days
It just seems these days all anyone cares about it money. Like I said above, the LIV guys can do what they think is best for them but that’s it, they only are thinking about what is best for them, not for golf, not for the future of the world, not for the people that are affected by 9/11 or anyone that is under the rule of the Saudi government only themselves. But they’re like most people these days.
I don’t want to get political on here because this site is dedicated to golf but I think a lot of todays problems come from greed and people only caring about what affects them. Oh, that doesn’t affect me so I don’t care. I feel, that one way or the other, everything we do affects all of us eventually.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m by no means perfect myself. There are things in my life I could improve on that impacts society as a whole. I could be driving a more efficient car or donating more to those in need. I’m sure there are things we can all do better. I just feel when you are someone famous or that others look up to what you do can influence a lot of people.
One other thing that drives me crazy. Is when athletes across any sports say “I’m doing this, or taking more money to take care of my family.” That is such BS. Just be honest and say I went this direction for more money, period. We all do it, I’ve chosen one job over another because it paid more money. In hindsight, I made the wrong move, but it is what it is. Back to the take care of my family comment. Even if you took the lower contact you’re still making more that 95%+ will make there entire lives so don’t use the family take, sounds very disingenuous to me.
Saudis are scary Mofos
This comment from Phil is quite telling true to me. Another example of getting a free pass just because you can make things disappear with a donation. I am not talking about golf but the US government. Once again, not a political site but I’ll just leave this here.
Its like quitting the NFL for the USFL
OK, I’m sure the point is made. Fine LIV guys, you do you. But to me the best comparison I can make is it seems like guys are leaving the NFL for the USFL or whatever lesser league there is. Why would I want to waste my time watching a golf league that reminds me of my kids when they were young and played sports? Yay, everyone gets a participation trophy, Whoopee doo. I can’t compete in the top leagues so I’m going to go to LIV whether I win or not. It just doesn’t feel like there is much incentive to win. It makes zero sense to me and i have zero interest in watching.
I really don’t understand why a guy like Dustin Johnson went to LIV. He’s gotta have plenty of money. I just figured he still had a chance to be one of the best golfers ever but that goes away playing LIV. But again, not sure his motivations.
I know the’re people saying the PGA needed to change some things, fine. But I think there would have been more effective ways to do it.
Conclusion
So what I am saying, LIV guys do what you think is best for you. I don’t agree and don’t think its right but I get it. I have no interest in watching the LIV tour, its watered down to me and I think Greg Norman is a spoiled brat that didn’t get his way in the past so his tantrums only leave me with a bitter taste for the new league.
But I do have a suggestion for LIV to get more viewers. Pay viewers to watch their tournaments. They’re paying golfers to join, why not pay viewers to watch. Heck I might think about it if they pay me, LOL.
