Got to my lesson on time and did a few warm-ups. Caught up with Chris about how things were going and talked about the rounds I’d played lately. He asked how I’d been hitting it — told him it’s been a mixed bag: played really well in Kansas, not great at home, then better, and not quite good enough at the Scrabble tournament.
We worked on irons for a bit, then I asked if we could focus on driver since I feel like my distance hasn’t been where I want it. First thing Chris cracked was my setup — using more tilt at address, left shoulder a little higher and right shoulder lower to help get the ball up in the air. It was turning me open, so we worked on getting my shoulders squared up. It almost feels like my left shoulder is pointing too far over the ball, but that’s actually what’s getting me lined up correctly.
We also talked about not hitting off my back foot. This is recurring for me — I need to feel like I’m getting to 100% on my left foot on the follow-through with every club, even the driver.
Driver session was good and bad as always. Hit one that felt really good, went 260. Wish I could do that every time, but 230–240 was more the norm when I struck it well. I’d take that consistently over what I’ve been hitting lately. I would be very happy with 250 on a consistent basis.
Main things we worked on:
- Releasing my hands through impact
- Getting my hands high and away from my body on the backswing — this was a big one
Chris also pointed out I shouldn’t add any wrist inflection on the driver — keep it neutral, which is what I’ve been doing. That inflection needs to show up in my irons instead, so that’s something I need to work on.
Overall, a good lesson — solid reminders of what I need to focus on when I play. Next lesson is set for two weeks out, on a Tuesday instead of Wednesday, so I can still get golf in with the boys.
