Friday — Sim Session (Garage)

Starting to see some real improvement in my lessons, even if it’s coming together in pieces. The old saying is proving true: it’s all in the hips. When I get my hips moving well, the distance improves noticeably — driving the hips back on the backswing and really coming through on the downswing. Played a round Friday, mix of good and bad. Should’ve jotted notes right after because the details are fuzzy now.

Sunday — Sim Session (Garage)

Wish I could have actually played a course this weekend but no such luck.

Started by working through a lot of what Chris has been showing me — keeping my head still, the lean, the turn. When I’m really committing to the full turn on the backswing and making sure to lead with the hips on the downswing, I’m hitting the ball well.

One encouraging sign: I’m occasionally hitting the ball further than I expect, which I never used to do. It used to be I’d hit my distance or come up short — never long. Definite distance improvement, and that’s a positive.

Played 18 holes on the sim — Ravenna Golf Course, which I’ve actually played in real life a few times years back. As usual, I’m limited to my hybrid and shorter clubs in the garage (can’t swing anything longer without hitting the ceiling beam). Even with that constraint, I was striking the ball well for the most part. As mentioned above, had a few go over the green because I’m hitting it better than expected now — which is honestly an encouraging problem to have. Even tho its a missed shot its kind of nice to see at this juncture of my journey.

The sim showed me shooting 72, one over par. Not entirely accurate given a few frustrating muligans, but overall it felt solid. Really trying to not use muligans to try and get a real feel for how I play but one really crappy shot and that goes out the door, haha.

Upcoming

  • Wednesday — Playing 9 holes with the boys at South Suburban (weather permitting)
  • Friday — Playing with Lucas at Overland Park for a work tournament through his job at Lockheed Martin
  • Next Monday – looks to be my next lesson, if I put it in my calendar correctly.

I’ll be honest — the tournament has me a little nervous. I don’t feel quite tournament-ready, but it is what it is. Going to try not to stress about it. Playing golf with my son is always enjoyable regardless of how it goes, and I don’t get too many chances to play with friends, so looking forward to it.
