Tuesday, July 14th — Golf in KC One of my best rounds of the year.
Played Lake Quivira Country Club in Kansas with my brother-in-law — a pretty tough course where I usually don’t play well, see some of my other rounds here. Today was the exception. I hit the ball really well overall: good drives, solid second shots, and the ball was drawing back nicely on quite a few of the shots I was hitting well. I did have quite a few three-putts, and missed a couple of chances at birdies, so there were a few more strokes left out there than needed to be.
I was beating my brother-in-law through nine — he told me I was winning — then had a couple of rough holes. First couple of double bogeys from probably knowing I was actually beating himm but I was proud of how I didn’t let it get in my head or rattle me the whole rest of the round; I pulled it back together and played well down the stretch. He ended up beating me by one, but I shot an 88, which I’m happy with. My current goal is trying to get into the 80s consistently.
A few shots really stuck with me:
- Hole 4 (par 4 – the hardest on the course): good drive in the fairway and great second shot with my hybrid to about 8-10 feef from the hole. I lipped out for birdie — settled for par.
- Hole 6 (par 3) hit a really great shot to the green. A longer hole so that was really nice. Had another 3 putt which wasn’t nice but good to get on the green in regulation.
- Hole 15 (par 5): decent drive, good second shot with the 3 wood and then flushed my hybrid from about 170 yards to land in regulation — one of the highlights of the round. Then three-putted for bogey. Damn it. (32 putts for the round is pretty high — need to get that number down.)
- Hole 17: (par 4) good drive, then smoked my second shot over the green and over the fence that protects hole 5 green (I think — hit it a little too well). Had to chip back through the trees but two-putted for bogey.
- Hole 18 (par 5): nice drive right down the middle, perfect second shot leaving an easy chip to the green, and two-putted for par — a great way to finish.
Overall, one of my best rounds of the year. It’s encouraging — feels like the lessons are working. really hitting the greens more in regulation which is nice. Gotta cut down on the 3 putts.
Nothing scheduled in the near term, so we’ll see how the next round shapes up.
