Golf at Lake Quivira Country Club – May 8th, Kansas City
Played golf in Kansas City on May 8th with my brother-in-law, his nephew, and I suppose his nephew-in-law. We played at Lake Quivira Country Club, where Jim is a member. He’s very generous and takes us out there frequently. It’s a really nice course — pretty straight, but lined with trees, so if you spray it left or right it’ll get you in trouble.
I don’t know what it is about that course, but I never seem to play particularly well there. The grass is different somehow. That said, I actually started off pretty well — I think I made five or six bogeys in a row that easily could have been pars. Just missed putts, lots of three-putts. I was making good contact with the ball.
Then things started going south around the 7th hole — a couple of bad shots, though I made up for them with a couple of decent ones. Hit a decent drive on one of the par 3s and managed to stay out of the water, which was a win. On 10, another par 3, I hit a good tee shot and got on the green, but ended up as far from the hole as possible — three-putt, of course.
11 is a par 4 and I pushed my drive right, which was frustrating. That was a bit of a pattern this round — pushing the driver right more than I had been in recent weeks. 12 is a big downhill hole that’s usually my nemesis, but I had a really nice drive and hit an 8 or 9-iron for my second shot to kick-in distance for a birdie. Very nice.
Reality came crashing back on 13 — bad drive, bad second shot, a couple of bad chips, and I hit a couple in the water being bull headed. Just kept whacking, I didnt take a second to calm myself or regroup, dumb. Damn. That was frustrating. Chipping used to be my strength, and I genuinely don’t know what’s gone wrong with it lately.
14, another par 3 — still another bad chip. Annoying, but I managed to salvage a bogey. 15 is a long par 5 — good drive, good second shot, not a great third, left it just short of the green . 16 I hit a really good shot but had trouble reading the green and knocked it way past — three-putt bogey. 17 I hit an okay drive and a great second shot just to the right of the green.
18 is a par 5 — hit a tree on the second shot, punched out, fourth shot toward the green, and finished with a 6 or 7. Shot a 97 overall.
Totally frustrating. There were genuinely good shots in there, but the chipping was awful. That’s what I need to fix. What am I doing?
Next round, 9 holes at South Suburban on Wednesday evening.
