Most golfers don’t struggle because they hit every iron shot badly.
They struggle because one shot is pure, the next is fat, and the next is thin.
That inconsistency is what makes golf frustrating.
As a mid-handicap golfer, I’ve spent years trying to understand why some days I could strike the ball well and other days I felt like I’d never swung a club before.
The good news is that inconsistent iron play usually comes down to a handful of common issues.
The Real Problem Isn’t Distance
Talk about:
- Most golfers feel distance is the most important aspect of golf. While distance is important it doesn’t matter a whole lot if you don’t hit the middle of the club.
- Contact quality matters. Not hitting the ball in the middle of the club can really hinder accuracy and distance. Making quality contact can really improve your game.
Common Cause #1: Poor Low Point Control
Explain:
- Ball-first contact
- Ground second
Common Cause #2: Lack of Forward Shaft Lean
- Casting
- Flipping
- Hands behind the ball
Common Cause #3: Too Much Lateral Movement
- For me the biggest problem is sway in my backswing. Even if I do everything else right swaying will cause me to hit behind the ball. It will cause me to hit off my back foot.
- Its almost impossible to get back to the beginning and hit the ball consistent
- This causes a lot of shots off the toe and week flair shots
Common Cause #4: Trying to Hit the Ball Hard
Tempo, tempo, tempo. On the backswing and the downswing.
I hit best when having a good slow backswing and a slight pause at the top, kind of like Cameron Young.
