Round Recap – July 9th, South Suburban (9 holes, walking)

Usual weekday nine. Against everyone’s advice, I swapped the shaft on my driver even though I’d been hitting it well — went from the A senior flex to regular flex. See the differences between the 2 driver shafts here. Not sure why, but it just feels better. tighter. Might be losing a little distance, but the dispersion seems way less crazy.

Overall a pretty good round with one blow-up hole. Every problem in my swing traces back to the sway — if I can turn correctly instead of swaying, I’m about 80% there. That showed up most on my chipping: when I fall backward (very similar to the sway) through the shot, I blade it. When I keep my weight forward on my front (left) foot, I’m golden. Its really a lazy and losing focus error. For me, gotta be on point every shot.

Hole by hole:

  • 1: Started with a par. Nice drive and on in regulation, 2 putt.
  • 2: Not a great drive, second with the 3 wood solid. On the fringe in 3 and 3 put for a bogey
  • 3: The blow-up hole. Ended up in the sand, took two to get out, then bladed a chip from falling backward. blah.
  • 4: A little thin, but hit it over the green — which is new since the lessons. I used to always come up short, so I’ll take it. 3 put again for a bogey.
  • 5 (Par 5): Sprayed the drive into the trees, had to re-hit (didn’t count that shot). Decent second and not great 3rd shot. Got the chipping working so tap in distance for a bogey.
  • 6: Really nice drive, really nice approach — but again flew it above the hole. Hit it too well coming down the hill. 3 putt again.
  • 7 (long Par 3): Didn’t hit my hybrid well. Sprinklers came on because the group ahead was playing so slow and it was getting late, so I had to rush a chip — pushed it right, missed the green, had to chip again. Double bogey. Bummer.
  • 8: Great drive, great second shot, drained a 10-foot birdie putt. Highlight of the round. Played the hole correctly, left my putt for an uphill shot so i could be aggressive.
  • 9: Another good drive, just missed the green — pushed it right, that put it above the hole. Made a solid downhill chip, went a bit long, but felt good about the contact.

Overall: Good round, and I can really see the lessons paying off. Feeling good heading into today’s round, and tomorrow I’m playing with the coach for our latest session — should be interesting since he hits it a mile and I don’t. Will report back on today’s round and tomorrow’s round with the instructor.
